LA PAZ: ONE OF THE SEVEN URBAN WONDERS OF THE WORLD

La Paz, government capital of the Plurinational State of Bolivia, is a unique symbiosis between the Andean cultures and modern life. Today, it has become a model city in terms of urban development, with the clear objective in a near future of becoming a metropolis. It was voted in 2014 as one of the top Wonder Cities of the World, that is emerging.

The city, located in west-central Bolivia 68 km (42 mi) southeast of Lake Titicaca, is set in a canyon created by the Choqueyapu River. It is a bowl-like location surrounded by the high mountains of the Altiplano. Overlooking the city is the towering, triple-peaked Illimani. Its peaks are always snow-covered and can be seen from multiple parts within the city. At an elevation of roughly 3,650 m (11,975 ft) above sea level, La Paz is the highest capital city of the world. Due to its altitude, La Paz has an unusual subtropical highland climate, with rainy summers and dry winters.

One of the highlights from the city is, it’s cable car system that is used as public transportation. The cable car is a system that can cope with the growing demand population that are its users and has managed to reduce the problems of traffic created by the precarious public  bus transport service. It is the most modern transportation system in Bolivia; in addition to reducing the chaotic traffic of La Paz to a large extent, contributes to the mitigation of high levels of environmental and noise pollution.

The cable network of La Paz is the most extensive; located at the highest altitude in the world, has a growing interest in South America, since several countries want to replicate the model. It has six lines: brown, purple, blue, silver, gold and white.

This innovative means of transport has become the highest urban cable car system in the world, located from 3640 to 4000 meters above sea level, between the mountainside in La Paz and the Altiplano in El Alto. The best way to get around this city is by the views of the stunning cable car system that descends to the city from the heights of El Alto.

In May 2014, it was officially recognized as one of the New 7Wonders Cities together with Vigan, Doha, Durban, Havana and Kuala Lumpur. La Paz is listed on the Global Cities Index 2014, and is considered a global city type “Gamma” by GaWC.
