City Overview

Abidjan is the economic capital of Cote d’Ivoire and is one of the most populous French-speaking cities in Africa. Abidjan is traditionally a low density and low-rise city. It is experiencing high levels of population growth, illegal and uncoordinated land occupation, and densification/subdivision of existing residential plots. The urbanization process in Abidjan is uncontrolled and mostly informal. The urban air quality in Abidjan is mainly affected by traffic, industrial sources, waste burning and domestic cooking contribute to the air pollution and its negative health effects. Urbanization, increasing mobility, and increasing air pollution trends are all linked to an increase in greenhouse gas emissions.

The projects in Abidjan attempt to improve urban mobility planning and management by creating a mobility plan, a resilience plan, and an intelligent transport system plan. The air quality will be monitored, and cleaner fuels, a younger vehicle fleet, better engine technologies and the enforcement of vehicle maintenance standards will be promoted. In addition to capacity building activities, the project will implement technology to enhance the sustainability of the transportation infrastructure, such as Area Traffic Control schemes, emissions monitoring equipment, and adaptation measures built into low-lying urban roads.
